What Is Roller Derby?
Roller derby is a full-contact sport played on quad roller skates. Each team starts with five skaters on the track, four blockers and one jammer. The jammer’s role is to score points by passing the opposing team’s blockers; the blockers’ role is to stop the jammer. (No, there’s no ball.)
The game takes place over two 30-minute halves made up of a series of “jams”, which can each be up to two minutes long. The team with the highest number of points at the end wins.
If you’re picturing roller derby as it was televised in the 1970s, don’t—modern roller derby is a serious sport. No theatrics, just athleticism.
